Lacerations and Other Trauma

Facial traumas are challenging injuries for patients to cope with, particularly because can directly affect a person’s appearance and ability to do otherwise routine activities, such as speak and eat. Anyone with a facial trauma needs the attention and care of a specialist who understands the delicate makeup of the facial bony structures and the soft tissues that surround it.

Mohs Reconstruction (Skin Cancer Reconstruction)

Skin cancer can take many different forms and appearances. Some skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma, look like raised red pearls on the surface of the skin. Other skin cancer appearances, such as Melanoma, look like darkened patches where lighter skin used to be. People with concerns over the development of skin cancer should keep an eye on their skin for changes in its appearance. Common signs include irregular borders on the skin, an asymmetrical appearance, or a change in color or appearance from what the patient is used to seeing.

How will the surgeon know that all of the cancer has been removed successfully?

The answer to this question will vary based on the type and location of the procedure. Some cancer treatments are shaved off gradually with the surgeon examining the tissue under the microscope as the procedure is performed. This will allow the surgeon to ensure that all of the cancer has been removed before closing up the surgical site.

What kind of cosmetic issues can the skin reconstruction address?

Common problems that people have concerns about after the cancer has been removed include the asymmetry of the skin appearance from one side of the body to the other, the tightness of the skin, the inhibition of movement, and the possibility of sagging skin. All of these problems can be addressed by a plastic surgeon, and every case will be handled on an individual basis.

Scar Revision

When physicians discuss a scar revision, they are talking about a cosmetic surgery that is used to return the skin to its natural appearance. This is a surgical procedure that is employed after either a traumatic injury, major surgery, or other wound has left a deep scar in the skin that patients might want revised. A scar revision surgery can also be used if a prior scar revision surgery did not deliver the desired results. There are multiple types of scars that might vary from the natural skin in regards to elevation, texture, tone, or color. This procedure can be used to revise the scar in a number of situations to bring the skin back to its natural look.

What Kind of Scars can be Revised?

This is a common question and the answer is that all scars are candidates for potential scar revision. Types of scars include childhood scars from injuries on the playground, scars left in traumatic accidents, and even scars that result from surgical procedures. While scars might vary in their length or texture, every scar is a candidate for revision. With this in mind, this doesn’t guarantee that the results of every revision surgery will be fully restored to its native state and every potential surgery is handled on a case by case basis.
