Many of them simply offer an injection or microneedling and while there marketing package may look attractive online, this may not be the right option or solution for you. Dr. Spalla will thoroughly explain your situation and come up with a tailored multifaceted approach to hair restoration for you.

Options for Restoration

Surgical restoration can be a great option, and the results can be outstanding. However, not all patients wish to undergo a surgical procedure, and therefore Dr. Spalla offers alternatives to surgery for patients, both male and female, wishing to restore their hair.

If you’re concerned about the appearance of your hair and want to improve your hair growth, you are likely a candidate for hair restoration treatment. Our Philadelphia plastic surgeon  consults with men and women who want help treating thinning hair on the scalp, a bald spot, or correcting a receding hairline. Hair restoration treatment can be sought at any age. However, it is vital that you are in good health and have a strong immune system. Having a chronic health condition like diabetes may adversely affect your treatment outcome, as can taking certain medications such as steroids or immunosuppressant medications.

You can expect Dr. Spalla to conduct a comprehensive medical history review and health exam. This helps him ensure that you can safely undergo treatment and that your investment into future hair growth can offer satisfying rewards.

Following a thorough history and examination, laboratory studies are pursued to evaluate for any underlying medical conditions which may play a role in your hair loss. Once these are ruled out, then Dr. Spalla can discuss potential options for you.

Options can include medications, both topical and oral as well as in-office treatments for hair loss.

Some of the ways in which hair loss can be treated here at Philadelphia Facial Plastic Surgery & Medspa are noted below.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure which utilizes ultra-fine needles to penetrate a defined depth into the skin. These tiny wounds are healed by the body. Through the healing process, new collagen is formed along with new capillaries to deliver nutrients to the skin. The new collagen helps to firm and tighten the skin and can also help to decrease fine irregularities in our skin’s texture. Microneedling has been found to promote hair growth when performed on areas of the scalp which are thinning or bald. Dr. Spalla and his team utilizes the Exceed™ microneedling device by Candela®. Combining this process with topical agents has been shown to enhance hair growth.

Topical therapies include proprietary solutions through pharmaceutical grade cosmeceuticals applied during the process of microneedling. Dr. Spalla is pleased to offer AnteAGE® products during the microneedling process to improve the appearance of your skin and also for hair regeneration. Dr. Spalla also offers more advanced solutions such as PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) to enhance your success of hair regeneration.

PRF is a wonderful solution for Dr. Spalla’s patients because PRF is from your own body (namely, a blood product). Dr. Spalla and his team will draw a small sample of your blood, and while you relax, they will centrifuge (spin rapidly) this sample in his lab which separates the blood into its various components. Dr. Spalla will then harvest the vital component of this and apply it to the treatment area while performing microneedling. There is no significant downtime with this procedure, and you can expect to return to work the following day.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) are wonderful solutions for Dr. Spalla’s patients because they are derived from your own body (namely, a blood product). Dr. Spalla and his team will draw a sample of your blood, and while you relax, they will centrifuge (spin rapidly) this sample in his lab which separates the blood into its various components. Dr. Spalla will then harvest the platelet-rich component of this solution and apply it to the treatment area.

The application of PRP or PRF can be done through a series of small injections or while performing microneedling. There is no significant downtime with this procedure, and you can expect to return to work the following day.

Sessions are typically done four weeks apart. 3 to 4 sessions are recommended as initial treatment with follow-up treatments done every six months to maintain results. The areas that respond best are the crown and the top of the scalp. The frontal hairline does not respond as well. These injections and microneedling with PRP/PRF can be done to other areas of the body such as the eyebrows or beard area for hair regeneration here as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical hair restoration painful?

Medical hair restoration is a very broad method of addressing hair restoration without the need for surgery. Therefore, it is typically a very easy process with little to no downtime. Even in the situation where injections are performed, such as in the case of PRP, this is a very tolerable procedure and a person could go back to work after having this done, if desired.

Are the results permanent?

The results from medical hair restoration can be permanent as long as one continues with maintenance therapy. Dr. Spalla likes to give the analogy of putting new sod on your yard. You can’t simply put new sod on your yard and walk away expecting it to last indefinitely. It requires maintenance, fertilization, and care. Through medical hair restoration, you can expect to maintain results as long as you continue with some therapy.

In the case of hair transplantation, the results can be permanent. However, the best results occur with additional maintenance therapies as well.

How long is the recovery period?

The recovery period after a medical hair restoration procedure varies, but generally, patients can expect mild discomfort, redness, and mild swelling in the first few hours, followed by healing within a few days at most. New hair growth is typically not seen for several months. Results continue to improve even at six and 12 months with continued therapy.

Are there any risks or side effects?

While medical hair restoration procedures are generally safe and well-tolerated, there may be some risks and side effects associated with these treatments. Certain oral medications may have side effects which doctors follow will go over with you in detail to determine what is best for you.

Regarding the injection procedures for microneedling, common side effects include mild discomfort, redness, and swelling in the treated areas, which usually subside within a couple hours but may persist for several more in some patients.

If someone undergoes hair transplantation, patients typically experience temporary scabbing or crusting at the transplant sites during the initial healing phase. However, these are normal parts of the recovery process and are usually manageable with proper post-operative care.
