What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are cosmetic procedures that exfoliate the skin and reveal a fresh, rejuvenated appearance through the use of medical grade solutions. A solution is applied to the skin, and as dead skin is sloughed off, a fresh new layer of skin is revealed. This process stimulates collagen production and improves the texture and tone of the skin.

How Do Chemical
Peels Work?

Each chemical peel uses a mixture of different chemicals to target different layers of your skin, and can range from being superficial, to medium, to deep, in terms of depth of penetration. Chemical peels are individualized and tailored to your skin’s unique needs.

Superficial Chemical Peels

Light peels only remove the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, and may be suitable for people looking to effectively treat fine lines, uneven skin tone, dryness, or acne. Superficial chemical peels are typically done in a series and are spaced several days to weeks apart. There is very little downtime to these peels.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium depth peels remove skin cells from the epidermis and the top parts of the dermis, the layer underneath the epidermis. Medium chemical peels produce more dramatic results than superficial peels and can be used to treat uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and acne scarring. These peels can be repeated, but the time between such peels is generally spread out by months. There is a downtime of several days associated with medium-depth chemical peels.

Deep Chemical Peels

A deep chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and dermis. The most dramatic of the three levels, you will not need a repeat treatment to see results. They are typically reserved for advanced aging of the skin or significant scarring. There is typically two weeks of downtime associated with this procedure

The Benefits of
Chemical Peels

Chemical peels offer numerous benefits for improving the appearance and health of your skin. Here are a few reasons why you should consider getting a chemical peel:

  • Rejuvenates the skin: They remove dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, younger-looking skin.
  • Improves uneven pigmentation: Chemical peels can effectively reduce hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage, acne scars, or melasma.
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles: By stimulating collagen production, chemical peels help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Improves scarring: Through collagen production and new skin cell turnover, the appearance of scarring can be diminished.

In addition to these primary benefits, chemical peels have secondary advantages, such as reducing acne breakouts and minimizing pore size, making them an ideal part of a long-term skincare plan.

One Cosmelan treatment includes the initial treatment, a touch up after 28 days, and a homecare routine including corrective serum, recovery moisturizer, and sunscreen (gentle cleanser not included).

The homecare routine should be continued for 6-8 weeks post treatment for maximal success. After the treatment, Michael looks forward to working with you to create a new routine to help you maintain the results of your Cosmelan treatment.

The Lucente® Peel

Lucente is a mesotherapy serum microneedled into the skin. It attacks melanocytes from the root and blocks them from reproducing.

Many hyperpigmentation treatments and products only target one or a couple of stages of the melanogenesis process.

Tranexamic acid, arbutin, and other ingredients work to target all stages of this process and treat all forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma, sun damage, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation/erythema. The mix of both competitive and non-competitive blockers allows this unique formula to:

  • Inhibit melanin formation
  • Inhibit/destroy melanosome formation and transfer
  • Exfoliate pigmented keratinocytes
  • Stabilize melanocyte activity via rich antioxidants

This peel is safe for all skin types and tones and can be done year round! It is also pregnancy-safe and has little to no downtime. Each box includes 2 treatments and a cream to use at home. It is recommended that those with superficial pigment do at least two treatments and that those with deeper pigment do at least four treatments. Dramatic results can be expected after 90 days.

Conditions Treated by Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can effectively treat a range of skin conditions, including:

  • Acne: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin and unclog pores, reducing acne breakouts and improving overall complexion.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Chemical peels can lighten dark spots caused by sun damage, age spots, and melasma.
  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines: By promoting collagen production, chemical peels can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful complexion.
  • Uneven Skin Tone/Texture: Chemical peels smooth out rough patches on the skin’s surface and minimize the appearance of large pores for a more even texture.
  • Sun Damage/Photodamage: Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin to reveal fresher, healthier-looking skin underneath.
  • Scarring: Through collagen production and new skin cell turnover, the appearance of scarring can be diminished.

Chemical peels can work to tackle a wide range of skincare problems, so if you’re not sure if you’re right for a chemical peel, reach out to Philadelphia Facial Plastic Surgery & Medspa experts and ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

The recovery duration after a chemical peel varies depending on several factors, such as the intensity of the peel and individual healing abilities. Generally, patients may experience redness, swelling, and slight discomfort immediately following the procedure. Some peels require minimal downtime with mild side effects that resolve within a few days. However, more profound or aggressive peels may result in longer recovery times with temporary changes in pigmentation and flaking or crusting of the treated area for up to two weeks.

Chemical peels can be customized to suit different skin types by adjusting the peel depth and chemicals used. However, some individuals may not be suitable candidates for certain chemical peels depending on their specific conditions or concerns. It is essential to have an evaluation with our healthcare providers, who will assess your suitability for a chemical peel based on your medical history and current skincare regimen.

Light peels are typically not painful. Some patients report a mild tingling or stinging sensation. Medium and deep peels may cause discomfort, which can be managed with topical anesthesia and/or sedation.

A standard peeling is a treatment that acts on the surface of the skin by chemically eliminating the top layers and contributing to its renewal. Chemical peels deliver high concentrations of exfoliating acids to the skin to brighten the complexion, even skin tone and to improve the appearance of spots and wrinkles. In the case of patients with dark spots, a peel can help fade the spots but the blemish will appear again if the mechanisms that produce it are not treated.

The Cosmelan® method visibly removes and attenuates spots (just like a peel) but it most importantly provides a regulating action as it corrects the overproduction of pigmentation to prevent the spots’ reappearance. While peelings act on the surface of the problem, Cosmelan® treatment targets the origin.

Cosmelan® is a unique combination of active ingredients of proven efficacy that acts on the entire process of spot formation to remove the accumulation of melanin and inhibit the formation of new spots.

Chemical peels offer an affordable option for individuals seeking to improve the appearance and texture of their skin. The cost of chemical peel treatment will depend on the type of peel, what’s being treated, and how many rounds of treatment you need. While repeated treatments may be necessary to maintain results, chemical peels can save costs in the long run by reducing the need for other skincare products or procedures.
