What is Facial Surgery and Why Do People Need It?
Facial surgery is a specialized field of plastic surgery that focuses on correcting deformities and abnormalities in the bones of the face. By surgically altering the structure of facial bones such as the jaw, cheekbones, or forehead, Dr. Spalla can enhance both functionality and aesthetics.
People may need facial surgery for various reasons. Some individuals are born with congenital conditions like cleft lip or palate that affect their facial structure and require surgical intervention for improvement. Others may experience trauma from accidents or injuries that result in fractures or misalignments in their facial bones. Additionally, some individuals pursue facial surgery to correct asymmetry or disproportionality in their features that they find unattractive.

Types of Facial Skeletal Surgery
Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation is a common type of facial skeletal surgery that aims to enhance the shape and definition of the chin. This procedure involves placing an implant or using bone reshaping techniques to provide balance and proportion to the overall facial profile.
Maxillary Advancement
Maxillary advancement is a surgical procedure where the upper jaw is repositioned forward in order to correct anomalies such as underbite or receding chin. By improving jaw alignment, this procedure can improve both function and aesthetics for patients.
Mandibular Osteotomy
Mandibular osteotomy is performed when there are misalignments or discrepancies in the lower jaw. Your surgeon carefully cuts through specific areas of bone, then realigns them into a more desirable position before fixing them with plates and screws. This technique allows for correction of asymmetries and improvement in bite functionality.
While these facial surgeries are common, Dr. Spalla performs surgery almost anywhere on the face, from the nose to the cheeks, fractures around the eyes, and even the temporal bones – the part of the skull around the ear.
One of the advantages of seeing Dr. Spalla is that he frequently collaborates with Dr. Nguyen, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who practices in the same office, and her expertise is invaluable in complex maxillofacial cases.
Common Facial
Skeletal Conditions
Malocclusion. This condition is characterized by misalignment of the upper and lower teeth. It can result in difficulty biting down, chewing, tooth pain, and speaking properly.
Maxillary hypoplasia. An underdevelopment or deficiency of the maxilla, which is the upper jaw bone. This condition can cause issues with breathing, speech, and aesthetics.
Mandibular prognathism. An abnormal protrusion or jutting out of the lower jawbone relative to the upper jawbone.
Bony fractures. Bony fractures can happen around the eyes, cheeks, jaw, and nose as a result of trauma. Common causes are car accidents or direct hits to the face. Bony fractures may not always need to be addressed, but if they do need to be addressed with surgery, you’re in expert hands with Dr. Spalla.
By addressing common facial skeletal conditions and trauma to the face through surgical interventions, individuals can experience improved oral function, enhanced aesthetics, and overall better quality of life.
